Will Iran close the Strait of Hormuz to trigger global oil crisis?

The confrontation between Iran and the US has reached its climax. The US is going to ban exports of Iranian oil to the world market from November 5 of this year. In turn, Iran threatens to block the passage of oil tankers of the Gulf countries through the Strait of Hormuz.Experts said that Tehran's unprecedented demarche may lead to a sharp deficit of oil and sow panic on stock exchanges. As a result, the price of "black gold" may surge up to $100 and above.Interestingly, Iran has never used its geographical advantage during the 20th century. Iran can control and, if necessary, close navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran had such a chance on October 17, 1973, when all Arab members of the OAPEC, as well as Egypt and Syria, declared an embargo on oil supplies to Western countries that supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War that started on October 6, 1973.Tehran had remained neutral then in the military confrontation of the Arab world with Israel, because the ruling Shah regime in Tehran used to be Washington's military-political ally in the Persian Gulf. The situation changed dramatically after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when toppled Shah Reza Pahlavi panicked and fled to the United States. The new Iranian authorities severed diplomatic relations with the United States and declared the  transatlantic superpower its prime enemy. During the war between Iran and Iraq in 1980-1988, Tehran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz for the first time. However, the Pentagon outstripped Iran by deploying its warships in the Persian Gulf, ready to attack the Iranian Navy at any time.Nowadays, in the light of the threat of the siting Iranian administration to block the Strait of Hormuz, US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln conducted a warning manoeuvre in the Persian Gulf. Thus, the USA showed Tehran an unambiguous signal: a war is inevitable if Iran tries to block free shipping in the strait.According to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Strait of Hormuz has the status of an international waterway and the countries adjacent to the strait have no right to restrict the passage of vessels and tankers of other countries through it.Analysts believe that despite formidable statements from Tehran, Iran is unlikely to aggravate relations with the United States. Iran can already celebrate diplomatic success, because Tehran has managed to break the previously unshakable united front of the United States and the European Union. During the US bombing of Serbia, Iraq and Libya, European NATO partners fully supported Washington's actions. However, when Donald Trump announced USA's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal on May 8 of this year, the European countries of NATO openly went against the will of the United States for the first time in decades. Moreover, they acted as a united front against Washington. On July 6, foreign ministers of the EU, Russia and China gathered for a meeting in Vienna to discuss the preservation of the nuclear deal with Iran. EU countries demonstratively did not invite the US to this meeting. The participants of the meeting opposed the policy of Donald Trump to isolate Iran and expressed their desire to expand trade and economic relations with Tehran. Thus, according to analysts, in the current situation, when the EU, Russia and China act as Iran's allies, Tehran is unlikely to give Washington an excuse to unleash a war. Iran's threat to block the Strait of Hormuz was most likely a good PR move the Islamic Republic in its verbal war against the United States.Aydin MehtiyevPravda.Ru Read article on the Russian version of Pravda.Ru

The Future of NATO

The Future of NATO Another Summit, more bickering over pay, a clear sign of the forthcoming end of the relationship as NATO fades into the annals of yesteryear where it belongs. After the Second World War, with Western Europe still quaking in its boots after the severe threat to its existence as pluralistic democracies posed by the Panzers of Hitler and with the rise of the Soviet Union as the all-conquering Nemesis of Fascism, Western Europe and its new bedmaster, the United States of America, felt the need to create a collective military alliance. It was called NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and they said its purpose was defensive in opposition to the Warsaw Pact. NATO was set up in 1949; the Warsaw Pact was formed in 1955. As a defensive measure against NATO.

China weaves financial web to oust Russia and USA from Middle East

After China's successful economic expansion into Central Asia, Beijing proceeded to implement its "Marshall Plan" for the Middle East. China has allocated $20 billion to restore economies of the Arab states. In addition, China and the Arab countries will create an inter-bank association worth three billion dollars.Chairman of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping announced these plans from the rostrum of the 8th Forum of China-Arab Cooperation in Beijing. He specified that the first tranche of $15 million was allocated to Palestine and another $90 million were allocated for humanitarian projects in Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. That is, it goes about the poorest countries in the Middle East, who suffered from the civil war.China does not forget about the richest countries of the Persian Gulf either, including Saudi Arabia. Beijing has been building up its defence cooperation with Riyadh. In particular, the two countries reached an agreement on the supply of 30 reconnaissance and attack unmanned aerial vehicles Rainbow-4 to the Saudis. In addition, Beijing is ready to finance the implementation of the construction of a high-speed railway from Saudi Arabia to Israel, although the project is under discussion.China's ultimate goal is to oust Russia and the United States from the Middle East by creating a giant financial web that will put the countries of the Middle East countries in economic dependence on China. One may assume that $20 billion allocated to the Middle East within the framework of the Chinese "Marshall Plan" will be invested in the development of interbank connections, as well as in the creation of transport arteries within the framework of One Belt, One Road project. This project provides for the revival of the Great Silk Road by creating an extensive infrastructure network from China's western borders to eastern and southern borders of the European Union. Transport corridors that connect Central and Eastern Asia with the Middle East include railways and highways, as well as sea and air routes, pipelines and power lines.New transport corridors that embrace about four billion of the planet's population, will allow the Middle Kingdom to dominate European and Asian markets. The Middle East takes an important place in Beijing's major project, as this region is a transit point connecting Asia and Europe. One of the main goals of the economic expansion of the Middle Kingdom to the Middle East is to gain access to extensive oil and gas resources of the Persian Gulf. According to experts, by 2020, the volume of natural gas consumption in China will increase to 420 billion cubic meters. Beijing needs cheap energy from the Middle East. The first step in this direction has been made. China's national oil and gas company CNPC has agreed with Tehran that in case of US sanctions against Total (France) in Iran, the Chinese gas giant will take the baton from the French to develop the field in South Pars. Iranian Minister of Oil Bijan Namdar Zangeneh confirmed the fact of the agreement. Thus, China's CNPC will control 80 percent of the gas field the reserves of which are estimated at 50 trillion cubic meters of gas.As for oil, China eyes import of "black gold" from Saudi Arabia. Currently, the share of Saudi oil in Chinese imports makes up 15 percent of the whole Chinese oil consumption. Beijing is ready to buy more oil from Saudi Arabia, but the latter should abandon the US dollar and switch to the yuan. In March 2017, Saudi King Salman signed a package of commercial agreements with the Celestial Empire worth 65 billion dollars. So far, Moscow and Washington have not commented on Beijing's economic expansion into the Middle East. However, in the next few years, when China takes control of a number of leading Arab countries, Russia and the United States will have to either recognise China's economic dominance in the Persian Gulf or sacrifice huge money to keep their influence in the Middle East. Putin-Trump meeting to decide the future of Ukraine

As it was earlier announced, the meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump would be mostly devoted to the situation in Ukraine. Some people in Ukraine are worried about their future after the meeting, whereas others hope that the crisis will finally end and everything will get back to normal. The World Cup that is about to finish in Russia has shown that the Western propaganda machine has failed to create the image of Russia as a monster with "many tentacles." By and large, the Russians and the Ukrainians are close to each other. Ukraine tried to boycott the World Cup. Ukrainian ministers for foreign affairs and for sports had written a few tearful letters to their foreign counterparts. As a result, it was only the UK that supported Ukraine, but purely for its own reasons. More than 5,200 citizens of Ukraine bought tickets and visited the tournament in Russia.  Ukraine's first national television channel refused to broadcast the games. Two sports TV channels belonging to oligarch Rinat Akhmetov took the same "patriotic" position. However, Inter TV channel snatched away the broadcasting rights, and the Ukrainians could enjoy the football festival on their TV screens. More than five million viewers watched the two matches of the Russian national football team against Spain and Croatia. In Ukraine, many were supporting Russia. After the initial successful performance of the Russian team, residents of Kiev, Kharkov and other cities of Ukraine were vigorously expressing their joy. Of course, even those who were vehemently opposed to the broadcast of the games in Ukraine were watching them with great interest. Most Ukrainians want to have good neighborly relations with Russia and express their utter disagreement with the policy of the Kiev authorities. What do Ukrainian politicians and experts think about this?"Kiev needs to change its rhetoric about Moscow," said Verkhovna Rada deputy Viktor Bondar, "It's time to stop traveling around the world asking other countries to continue putting pressure on Russia, imposing sanctions on Russia and asking for weapons. All this will only lead to responsive measures. Instead of making threats, we should launch the economic revival of the state. When Ukraine becomes rich and strong, we will be reckoned with. If we launch radical changes in the economy of Ukraine, Moscow will see that the situation in Ukraine is getting better, and Russia will see that Ukraine is going in the right direction. So far, we are fighting and fighting, making matters worse and worse," the official said. Can Ukraine do what the MP said? "It's been more than four years, but the Kiev authorities are still uncertain who is to blame and what to do. No one will give Kiev low-interest loans. Washington has already taken what it wanted from Ukraine - Maidan riots. The Americans did not have a goal to make Ukraine become a progressive Eastern European state," political scientist and economist Alexander Dudchak believes. The head of the Ukrainian Analytical Center, Alexander Okhrimenko, believes that the Ukrainian banking system is unable to attract Western investors. "After the things that former head of the National Bank Valerya Gontareva has done to our banking market, no European bank wants to hear anything about Ukraine. Neither US nor European banks will come to Ukraine in the next 10-20 years," the expert says.As for the political course of Ukraine, it can change only if the country's administration changes, Alexander Dudchak said. "For the sitting Ukrainian administration, Russophobia and anti-Russian rhetoric make the basis of the shaky ideological construction on which both the domestic and foreign policies of Ukraine are based. Without the presence of an external enemy, this power is unable to explain all its catastrophic failures, the loss of territories and the population - both because of migration and the armed conflict in the Donbas," the political scientist said. "The Kiev authorities know perfectly well that there is no such thing as isolation of Russia. They know that Ukrainian citizens ignore calls to boycott the World Cup in Russia. Those who can afford it - they go to Russia, those who can not - they stay at home and watch the games on TV. The Kiev administration  is unable to adequately respond to reality," he added.

ASIA/FILIPPINE – I Redentoristi: “Urge contrastare violenza e impunità”
